SlingPlayer for Windows 8 Now Available

Windows 8 menu with SlingPlayer appSince the arrival of Windows 8 (now Windows 8.1), Slingbox customers have been asking for an app that can be used on their Windows 8 tablets, convertibles, laptops and desktop computers. Sling Media is pleased to announce that the SlingPlayer for Windows 8 app* is now available in the Windows 8 App Store.

Windows 8 tablet, convertible and PC owners can test-drive the app for free for 24 hours. If they decide to purchase, the app is $14.99, similar to other versions of the SlingPlayer app.

SlingPlayer for Windows 8 galleryWhile customers with Windows 8.1 devices (not including Windows RT-based Surface tablets) have been able to use Sling Media’s web-based player in desktop mode, the new SlingPlayer for Windows 8 app provides a unified experience across all Windows 8 tablet, convertible, laptop and desktop computers, with a few cool new features that we think customers will enjoy:

  1. Gallery View: We’ve introduced an intuitive and visually pleasing way for customers to discover and navigate to TV programs that are on at that moment or soon after.
  2. Touch-Enabled User Interface: To address the increasing number of Windows 8 devices that support touch-controls, the app’s touch-enabled user interface allows customers to navigate by touch. Mouse and click control options are still available.
  3. Windows RT Support: Windows RT tablet customers can now access their Slingbox.

Big Thanks to Carnegie Mellon

Carnegie Mellon social media team for Sling Media projectOver the past few months, the Sling Media marketing team has been working with a trans-disciplinary group of graduate students from Carnegie Mellon University on our social media presence. They took a deep-dive into the company, as well as the industry, to come up with applicable recommendations and innovative ideas that we’re excited to put into place.

Since the final presentation has been given and the semester is coming to a close, we just wanted to send a shout-out to our Carnegie Mellon team members and their professor, Ari Lightman, and to thank them for a job well done. We’d do it all over again!

Sling Media Faves: TV Blogs

TV in the background; laptop in the foregroundIt’s no secret – we love TV here at Sling Media. In fact, we love it so much that it’s not enough just to watch it. We want to read about the industry to find out what’s going on behind the scenes and engage with others on social media platforms about specific shows or actors. We turn to Twitter and Facebook but we also turn to a few great TV blogs that provide insightful analysis and in-depth commentary – or just plain, old gossip.

Here are our favorites, in no particular order:

  • Tubular
Straight out of The Houston Chronicle, Tubular focuses on one show at a time, as its tagline suggests. Since there are a million things to talk about with regards to TV, highlighting one of them is a different and calmer approach – much like their Texas twang.
  • TV.com
Owned and operated by CBS Interactive, TV.com is a 5-in-1 package offering news, reviews, gossip, listings and forums. It’s like the Walmart of TV blogs.
  • The TV Addict
One man’s passion is another man’s source for news, interviews and opinions on all-things-TV. Back in 2006, Daniel Malen, the original TV Addict, started the blog as his own soapbox to discuss what he loved the most: TV. Since then, he’s added a few writers (and affiliate advertising), but his grassroots origins are still reflected in the style and tone of the news, interviews and opinion pieces that the blog features.
  • HuffPost TV
Let’s face it, the main attraction at HuffPost TV is Maureen Ryan. The TV critic is intellectual yet unpretentious; entertaining yet informative. In fact, Complex, the pop culture website, ranked her as the No. 1 TV blogger (among 25) in April 2013. She also has a popular podcast, “Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan,” that she co-hosts with Ryan McGee, a freelance TV critic (ranked No. 17 on the same Complex list).
  • Lost Remote
These days, TV and social media go hand-in-hand (or, will eventually get to that point). Lost Remote, a mediabistro outlet, talks about the strengthening connection between TV and social media and its various offshoots (i.e., second screen, etc.). They’re also embarking on event production. “Inside Social TV” is their inaugural event, taking place later this month on December 13th in Los Angeles where our own Brian Jaquet will be speaking.
